Tratamento a praga das palmeiras
O insecto vermelho das palmeiras com o nome científico Rhynchophorus ferrugineus, causador da morte de palmeiras, alimentando se do interior das mesmas, espalhou se do continente asiático até Arábia, chegando a Espanha a (a partir do Egipto) há uns anos e agora chegou a Portugal, mas presente ainda na Zona do Algarve.Esse insecto gosta de todo o tipo de palmeira, mas as suas preferidas são as Phoenix. Quando os primeiros sintomas aparecem (queda das folhas centrais) é em regra geral demasiado tarde para recuperar a palmeira.

Podem ser colocadas armadilhas de “pheromone” como prevenção que apanham o insecto num raio de 50 metros. Quando os insectos ficam presos na armadilha, seria conveniente tratar das suas palmeiras para que mais nenhum bicho volte a entrar.(Relembramos que a fêmea desse insecto pode pôr até 200 ovos). Quando o Rhynchophorus ferrugineus está dentro da palmeira, o mesmo pode ser moro através de injecções de insecticida próprio. Também podem ser dadas caldas de insecticidas nas folhas que normalmente é suficiente para palmeiras de porte pequeno.Quando já é impossível a recuperação da palmeira infectada, o melhor é retirar a mesma para evitar que os insectos se propaguem para outras palmeiras. Os restos devem ser queimados para que sejam mortos os insectos que estão por dentro.
Essas precauções são muito importantes para ajudar a controlar esta praga que já matou milhares de palmeiras em outra regiões do mundo.Origem da doença foi trazida por tamareiras importadas de Africa via Portugal para a Europa tendo o nosso país servido unicamente de passagem pelas facilidades ou antes dificuldades de controle (falta de foncionários)servindo de ponte ao abastecimento dos principais viveiros espanhois durante vários anos entre 2000 e 2007 .Claro que o insecto escolheu depois especies depois o seu melhor habitat ,a palmeira das canárias.
