O insecto vermelho das palmeiras com o nome científico Rhynchophorus ferrugineus, causador da morte de palmeiras, alimentando se do interior das mesmas, espalhou se do continente asiático até Arábia, chegando a Espanha a (a partir do Egipto) há uns anos e agora chegou a Portugal, mas presente ainda na Zona do Algarve.
Esse insecto gosta de todo o tipo de palmeira, mas as suas preferidas são as Phoenix. Quando os primeiros sintomas aparecem (queda das folhas centrais) é em regra geral demasiado tarde para recuperar a palmeira.
Podem ser colocadas armadilhas de “pheromone” como prevenção que apanham o insecto num raio de 50 metros. Quando os insectos ficam presos na armadilha, seria conveniente tratar das suas palmeiras para que mais nenhum bicho volte a entrar.(Relembramos que a fêmea desse insecto pode pôr até 200 ovos). Quando o Rhynchophorus ferrugineus está dentro da palmeira, o mesmo pode ser moro através de injecções de insecticida próprio. Também podem ser dadas caldas de insecticidas nas folhas que normalmente é suficiente para palmeiras de porte pequeno.
Quando já é impossível a recuperação da palmeira infectada, o melhor é retirar a mesma para evitar que os insectos se propaguem para outras palmeiras. Os restos devem ser queimados para que sejam mortos os insectos que estão por dentro.
Essas precauções são muito importantes para ajudar a controlar esta praga que já matou milhares de palmeiras em outra regiões do mundo.

Red Palm Weevil, deadly plague in palms in Portugal
The red palm weevil, killer of palms by eating the insides, has spread from Asia to Arabia. Arriving in Spain (from Egypt) several years ago, it has arrived in Portugal, especially the Algarve.
It likes palms in general but prefers the phonix palms. When the first symptoms appear (falling over of the centre leaves), it is often too late for the palm to recover. As prevention pheromone traps can be installed. These will catch the wevils within 50 meter radius.
If you catch weevils in the trap it would be a good idea to treat your palms, in case the odd weevil went to your palm instead ( remember, one female weevil can lay up to 200 eggs). When weevils are already inside your palms, they can be killed by injecting the palm with a proper insecticide. The leaves can be sprayed with a systemic insecticide, which is enough when the palms are still very small.
If a palm is beyond recovery, the best thing is to remove it before the weevils have left it and spread to other palms. The remains should be burned, to kill all weevils still inside. This is very important to help control this pest, which has already killed millions of palms in other regions of the world.

Der rote Palmenrüssler -
Tödliche Käferplage bedroht die Palmen in Portugal
Der Rote Palmenrüssler, eine von Asien über Arabien eingeschleppte Käferart, frisst sich durch den Palmenstamm von oben beginnend und tötet somit die Pflanze. Der Käfer wurde bereits vor Jahren in Spanien entdeckt (aus Ägypten kommend), und hat jetzt auch Portugal erreicht, im speziellen die Algarve.
Betroffen sind ALLE Palmen. Bevorzugt wird die Phoenix Palme, aber auch die Washington robusta, diverse Ölpalmen, Dattelpalmen, Kokospalmen und sogar Agaven sind gefährdet.
Wenn die ersten Symptome auftreten ist es für die Palme bereits zu spät: Die Palmwedel werden von der Mitte her gelb und die Pflanzen sterben ab.
Um dem Schädlingsbefall vorzubeugen empfehlen wir das Aufstellen von Pheromon- Fallen, diese locken die Käfer in einem Umkreis von 50 Metern an. Befinden sich Käfer in den Fallen empfiehlt sich eine sofortige Behandlung aller Ihrer Palmen, da sie bereits von Käfern befallen sein könnten. Denn beachten Sie: ein weiblicher Käfer kann bis zu 200 Eier legen.
Sind die Käfer bereits ins Innere der Palme eingedrungen können sie durch die Injektion eines geeigneten Insektizides getötet werden. Die Palmwedel können ebenfalls regelmäßig mit einem Insektizid eingesprüht werden, was normalerweise bei kleinen Palmen erfolgreich ist.
Ist eine Palme nicht mehr zu retten, sollte diese umgehend vernichtet werden, bevor die Käfer die Pflanze verlassen und weitere Palmen befallen können. Die Pflanzen sollten verbrannt werden, um alle Schädlinge im Inneren zu vernichten. Diese Vorgehensweise ist sehr wichtig, um die Käferplage zu kontrollieren, welche bereits Millionen von Palmen auf der ganzen Welt vernichtet hat.
