The Executive Board of Unesco approves a resolution to declare on November 26 the International Olive Tree Day.

O Conselho Executivo da Unesco adotou recentemente uma resolução recomendando a proclamação do Dia Internacional da Oliveira no dia 26 de Novembro de cada ano.

Esta questão foi incluída na agenda da 206ª reunião desta instituição, a pedido do Líbano e da Tunísia.

Como anunciou a embaixadora da Tunísia na Unesco, Ghazi Guerairi, a resolução enfatiza que a oliveira, símbolo de paz, sabedoria e harmonia, contribui para o desenvolvimento econômico e social sustentável da humanidade, para que a celebração do Dia Internacional da Oliveira contribuir para a promoção dos valores universais que unem os seres humanos e as culturas, assim como a protecção dessa milenária e a preservação de seu valor perene.

Também enfatiza que a oliveira é um elemento de unidade e diversidade de todas as culturas desde tempos imemoriais, que transcende fronteiras e permite trocas frutíferas entre a humanidade. Reconhece também o seu lugar como um elemento cultural com forte presença em numerosas expressões artísticas e culturais, o seu papel como vetor de diálogo cultural e troca de conhecimento, e sua contribuição para os processos de desenvolvimento.

Além disso, esta resolução enfatiza que a oliveira desempenha um papel fundamental para ajudar as populações locais a criar raízes em suas regiões, constitui uma barreira contra a desertificação e protecção contra a erosão e é um agente na luta contra o aquecimento global, capturando mais CO2 do que Emite sob a forma de gases com efeito de estufa na atmosfera ao longo do seu ciclo de cultivo e durante o processo de produção do azeite.

Por sua vez, reconhece o impacto do sector oleícola no emprego e na preservação do ambiente, e a sua consequente contribuição para o desenvolvimento sustentável, bem como as virtudes do azeite para a saúde, as suas propriedades terapêuticas e os seus benefícios dietético.

Finalmente, recomenda que a Conferência Geral da Unesco, em sua 40ª sessão, inclua esta questão na agenda e aprove uma resolução para proclamar o dia 26 de Novembro, o Dia Internacional da Azeitona.

The Executive Board of Unesco has recently adopted a resolution recommending the proclamation of the International Olive Tree Day on the 26th of November each year. 

This issue was included in the agenda of the 206th meeting of this institution at the request of Lebanon and Tunisia.

As Tunisian ambassador to Unesco, Ghazi Guerairi, announced, the resolution emphasizes that the olive tree, symbol of peace, wisdom and harmony, contributes to the sustainable economic and social development of the humanity, so that the celebration of the International Olive Tree Day will contribute to the promotion of those universal values ​​that unite human beings and cultures, as well as the protection of this millenary tree and the preservation of its perennial value.

It also emphasizes that the olive tree is an element of unity and diversity of all cultures since immemorial time, that transcends borders and allows fruitful exchanges between mankind. It also recognizes its place as a cultural element with a strong presence in numerous artistic and cultural expressions, its role as a vector of cultural dialogue and the exchange of knowledge, and its contribution to development processes.

In addition, this resolution emphasizes that the olive tree plays a fundamental role in helping local populations to take roots in their regions, constitutes a barrier against desertification and protection against erosion and is an agent in the fight against global warming, capturing more CO2 than it emits in the form of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere throughout its cultivation cycle and during the production process of olive oil.

In turn, it recognizes the impact of the olive sector on employment and the preservation of the environment, and its consequent contribution to sustainable development, as well as the virtues of olive oil for health, its therapeutic properties and its dietary benefits.

Finally, it recommends that the General Conference of Unesco, at its 40th session, includes this issue in the agenda and approves a resolution to proclaim the 26th of November, the International Olive Day.
